Cellnex develops HbbTV technology for the new DTT audiovisual platform adapted to new consumption habits

  • With this platform, Spanish broadcasters will be able to offer viewers the chance to catch up with the previous week’s television content.
  • Among other solutions, this platform will make it possible to watch programmes from the beginning even when they have already started

Barcelona, 22 May 2018.  Cellnex Telecom is the technological provider for the platform Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE and its two large private broadcasting groups, Atresmedia and Mediaset, are working together to launch. This  platform, which allows viewers to enjoy the advantages of linear DTT while they can access content and new non-linear services.

The platform will harness the internet’s capacity to improve viewer experience, offering more features, such as:

  • Viewing the contents of the previous week
  • Starting a programme from the beginning when it has already begun
  • Improved programming guide, etc.

This new service is based on Hybrid DTT technology and will be available to viewers who have an internet-connected compatible TV.

The interactive TV standard HbbTV (Hybrid broadcast broadband TV), the basis of Hybrid DTT.

As a key member of the European HbbTV Association, Cellnex has played an active role in developing the HbbTV standard from the outset, and is currently part of the Association’s Steering Board.

Hybrid broadcast broadband TV is the global initiative working to harmonise Broadcast-broadband services for viewers through connected TVs, set-top boxes and multi-screen devices.

The HbbTV standard makes it possible to receive audiovisual content and services combining conventional DTT and Internet broadcaster services.

Interactivity is therefore becoming the keystone for viewers, in a digital society in which consumption of audiovisual content is also multiscreen and mobile, but coexists with a high penetration of conventional DTT.
