"We measure our carbon footprint so we know how to reduce it"

Calculating our carbon footprint is a key step towards understanding the company’s impact on the environment and setting emission management and reduction targets. That’s why Cellnex calculates its carbon footprint annually based on ISO 14064-1:2018 standard and the results are checked annually by an independent third party in accordance with ISO 14064-3:2019 standard.

Cellnex conducted a comprehensive screening of its indirect emissions in 2020 to determine their relevance in line with the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) and ISO 14064-1:2018 This was used as the basis to define emission reduction targets to keep the increase in global temperature below 1.5°C, as established by the Science Based Target (SBTi) and Business Ambition for 1.5°C initiatives. Cellnex has joined these initiatives, setting goals such as carbon neutrality for scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2025.

Toezeggingen

OP WETENSCHAP GEBASEERDE DOELSTELLINGEN

  • Cellnex committeert zich aan het verminderen van absolute scope 1 en 2 BKG-emissies en scope 3 BKG-emissies van brandstof- en energie gerelateerde activiteiten tegen 2030 met 70%, vanaf het basisjaar 2020. We committeren ons ook aan het verhogen van de jaarlijkse inkoop van hernieuwbare elektriciteit, van 0% in 2020 tot 100% in 2025. Daarnaast zetten we ons in om de absolute scope 3-emissies van gekochte goederen en diensten, en de BKG-emissies van kapitaalgoederen tegen 2025 met 21% te verminderen ten opzichte van basisjaar 2020.

ENERGIETRANSITIEPLAN

  • In 202,1 is, in lijn met het Strategisch Duurzaamheidsplan, een Energietransitieplan opgesteld om een roadmap voor de komende jaren te definiëren. Dit plan is gericht op een verantwoord beheer van het energie- en waterverbruik, het minimaliseren van de impact en het optimaliseren van hulpbronnen.

ZAKELIJKE AMBITIE VOOR 1.5ºC

  • Cellnex sloot zich aan bij de “Business ambitie voor 1,5°C” Global Compact om de stijging van de mondiale temperatuur te beperken tot 1,5ºC. Dit initiatief zet twee actiegebieden uiteen: "Wetenschappelijke doelstellingen in lijn met 1,5°C" en "Netto-zero-emissieverplichting".

Offsetting scope 1 emissions

In 2020 Cellnex offset 2,850 tons of CO2 by purchasing 2 850 VER (verified emission reductions) credits in the voluntary market from the Taquesi River Hydroelectric Power Project in Bolivia, with Verified Carbon Standards (VCS).

 

Preparing infrastructures for future climate impacts

Cellnex has undertaken a climate scenario analysis based on the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). The company has a Global Risk Management System in place to integrate climate change risks into the general identification, analysis, action and monitoring process.

In line with TCFD recommendations for the identification of these risks and opportunities, we performed an analysis of physical and transition scenarios that make it possible to determine the resilience of the organisation to variations in climatic, political and economic trends arising from climate change.

Autonomous energy generation, accumulation and management system for cellular/vehicular communication sites without access to the electricity grid that were previously powered by highly polluting generators.

The main goal of the LEAN project is to provide a mobile broadband Internet service in areas where it would not be economically viable to deploy and operate standard infrastructure, either because the area has few potential users (rural locations) or because the end users have low purchasing power (emerging countries). To this end, the project designed a solar and wind energy powered site that provides mobile broadband connectivity and advanced IoT services.

Fixed wireless access solution for 5G (FWA), part of the Red.es 5G project in Andalusia, which also includes other specific use cases linked to 5G, such as security at large gatherings and autonomous picking.
