17th Annual Critical Communication World. Cellnex Telecom unveils its technological roll-out for emergency and security services.

17th Annual Critical Communication World

  • For the first time, Barcelona is hosting Critical Communication World, a fair which brings together users, operators and developers of security and emergency service networks
  • Cellnex Telecom will be sponsoring the sessions in the auditorium for conferences in Spanish, under the heading “Emergency communications networks of today and tomorrow”

Barcelona, 19 May 2015 Cellnex Telecom, one of Europe’s leading independent infrastructure operators for wireless broadcasting telecommunication, is participating in the 17th Annual Critical Communication World, which being held in Barcelona until Thursday. This is the first time that this international fair has come to Barcelona.

Cellnex Telecom will have a stand where it will be presenting its range of TETRA and PPDR (Public Protection and Disaster Relief) networks for security forces. It is also the sponsor for the sessions in Spanish which will be held in the auditorium.

The company is continuing its commitment to innovative technological solutions which optimise the resources and management of public emergency and security services. Two examples of the technological services due to be presented in the fair are:

Cellnex Telecom is responsible for the technological solution which underpins Catalonia’s Medical Emergency System (SEM), as well as for the maintenance of the 4 control centres fitted with 110 transmitters. The system also has 560 TETRA units fitted in the SEM’s ambulances and helicopters, as well as 750 portable terminals issued to the members of the medical team.

Features of the service. From the control centres, the location of the accident is pinpointed, and the characteristics and seriousness of the accident gauged, in order to then notify the medical team and the available ambulances. Accident sheets are also filled in (by tablet, smartphone or digital pen) at the control centres to provide all the information to the attending doctor and the ambulance team on their way to the scene of the accident. The control centres can also track the different teams providing services on a map, thus helping to control and manage resources.

The mobile vehicles are fitted with TETRA terminals, through which they connect up to the Catalan Regional Government’s security and emergency network. The system developed by Cellnex also allows different devices, such as tablets and smartphones, to connect with the ambulance by WiFi in order to send reports, photographs or perform other procedures. The network that these devices and the portable terminals carried by the medical team connect up to is totally secure, so that it cannot be hacked or intercepted by users from outside Catalonia’s emergency and security services.

  • Real-time transmission of images from the Catalan Traffic Service

The system Cellnex Telecom has developed for the Catalan Traffic Service allows the real-time transmission of video and images from helicopters specially fitted with cameras and antennas. The system covers 90% of the area of Catalonia, when the helicopter fly at a height of at least 300m. The system has 9 permanent reception centres located in the region’s main cities and other sites, as well as 4 mobile receivers for vehicles for when the signal between the permanent reception centre and the helicopter is weak.

This technological roll-out allows the helicopters flying over the region to control the traffic and keep it moving at critical moments, such as accidents, when large amounts of traffic are leaving the city, holiday periods, etc. As such, at the control centres the display can show the optimal traffic control options, whether ambulances need to be sent, or other tasks relating to the traffic situation in real time.

Cellnex Telecom is playing a key role in promoting TETRA networks through an extensive deployment aimed at the country’s security and emergency services, including Civil Protection, Local and Regional Police, Health Emergencies, Forestry Rangers, Public Resource Control and Management and other bodies.

  • Talk entitled “Use of TETRA and complementary technologies to offer Broadband Services to the Security and Emergency services in Spain”

Also worthy of special mention is the conference to be given on Wednesday by Mirko Masi, Head of Infrastructures and Mobile Communications Services at Cellnex Telecom, in connection with PPDR (Public Protection and Disaster Relief) networks. During his presentation, Masi will be speaking of users’ needs in this area of communications, the technologies currently available, and their application in the sector.

He will also be touching on the problem of the availability of frequencies for future generations of PPDR networks.
