We are Europe’s leading operator of wireless telecommunications infrastructures to empower connectivity for people and territories, driving digitalisation in Europe.

We were born in 2015 as the result of a spin-off from the telecommunications division of Abertis Group and at that point we went public as an independent company under the name Cellnex Telecom.

With our main offices in Spain, we have kept on growing since then and now operate in a total of 12 European countries with the goal of creating a pan-European telecommunications infrastructure platform.

Alphen aan den Rijn

Facts

Several of our telecom & data towers are breeding places for peregrine falcons, and that includes this tower in Alphen. Other towers that shelter these birds of prey are the tower in De Mortel, Zwolle and Haarlem. The 135-meter-high tower in Alphen in the only place in the Groene Hart (Green Heart) where the birds have settled down. They don’t occur anywhere else in the region.

After purchasing 24 towers/radio masts from KPN, Cellnex began establishing datacenters in these towers. In 2010, the datacenter in Alphen aan de Rijn was the second datacenter to be established.

Since December 22, 2017, the tower is permanently illuminated.

Facts

In 2009, the telecom and data tower, located on the Amsterdam Zuidas was increased from 106 meters to almost 150 meters and thus became one of the highest buildings in the city. The tower was also embellished that year, after the design of architect Christof Schwencke. The concrete shaft of the tower was painted azure. The shaft, with a surface of over two thousand square meters, was covered in five layers of coating. One of the requirements that the municipal council of Amsterdam made prior to issuing the building permit had to do with the aesthetic aspect. The tower shouldn’t look out of place among the prestigious and beautifully designed structures on the Zuidas.

Light art has been installed in the tower. The design of the light art is an initiative of the Projectbureau Zuidas, the Virtueel Museum Zuidas and KPN. The artwork, White Noise, was designed by the well-known light artist Giny Vos. When it gets dark, a constantly changing image of planets and stars appears on the tower. This 94-meter-high steel tubular pole was built in the hilly landscape of the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem, Limburg in 1972. The road on which this datacenter is situated, the Eyserbosweg, is infamous among cyclists.

The tower was owned by KPN until 2007. Cellnex bought the tower and established its data centre in it. With a total floor surface area of only 40 m2, this is the smallest of our datacenters.

Facts

The telecom and data tower in De Mortel shelters the peregrine falcon. On the website www.beleefdelente.nl, you can observe the comings and goings of the peregrine falcon pair that nested there in 2005. Vogelbescherming Nederland (Dutch society for the protection of birds) put a webcam in the nest a couple of years ago that records all the events in the nest. The view inside the nest isn’t just fun and interesting; the peregrine falcons also make themselves useful by scaring off pigeons. Pigeons are the falcon’s preferred prey. Because of the inconvenience of their excrement, pigeons can become a nuisance in the towers.

This tower was put into service in 1989 and was owned by KPN until 2007. The radio mast only transmits radio signals. The 128-meter-high concrete construction bears a close resemblance to the tower of Ittervoort, but is 10 meters higher.

Facts

The Goes tower is the oldest radio and television mast in the Netherlands. Even the Gerbrandy Tower is more recent. It was built in 1957, on the behest of then minister Cals, to make radio and television available in the whole of the Netherlands.

Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening, the tower is illuminated. It is truly a beacon in the landscape of the province of Zeeland. Because of this and because of its age, the tower is quite well-known. It even has its own website filled with interesting details and historical facts.

The datacenter in this radio mast in Goes is the sixth datacenter that Cellnex has set up. In terms of capacity, it is also one of our largest datacenters.

The telecom & data tower in the Waarderpolder has been in use since 1972. For years, the 149-meter-high tower stood in a relatively empty industrial area. It is quite remarkable to realise that the tower was built in only 25 days.

This tower also shelters peregrine falcons, like the tower in De Mortel.

Facts

In 1951, the very first radio mast for television (Nederland 1) was built in Hilversum, but this mast was replaced by this new mast on the Witte Kruislaan in 1973. At first, the tower was 142 meters high, but the current construction is 196 meters. In 2011, the tower was named the ‘Man Bijt Hond’ television tower. At the start of the new television season of 2013, the tower was ‘officially opened’.

The Cellnex Media Gateway in Hilversum Mediapark, close to Amsterdam, is a 1400 m2 colocation and connectivity datacenter, enabling public and commercial broadcasters as well as media and telecom companies to connect with their audiences and with each other.

The state-of-the-art datacenter is directly connected to all major carriers, telcos and ISPs, and a growing number of football stadiums, TV studios and event locations.

Opened in 2001, the Media Gateway was the first commercial carrier-neutral datacenter in the Hilversum Mediapark, with ambitions to become the broadcast media hub of Northern Europe. Since November 2021, Cellnex has acquired the datacenter from Red Bee. With this acquisition Cellnex has expanded its’ datacenter offering. The Media Gateway is a valuable addition to Cellnex’ datacenter portfolio. It is centrally located near Amsterdam and rackspace is immediately available.

Facts

The telecom & data tower in Hoogersmilde was brought into use on November 24, 1959 and was named Zendmast Smilde. The construction has a height of 303 meter in total.

On the 50th anniversary of the tower in 2010, RTV Drenthe broadcast, among other things, a short documentary about the last couple of years and an hour-long recording of the construction on 1959.

In 2007, Cellnex purchased this tower – and 23 others in the Netherlands – from telecom company KPN. In April of 2015, a collaboration with CJ2 led to the tower being named CJ2 Datatoren.

The Gerbrandy Tower may well be the best-known radio mast in the Netherlands and it is most certainly the highest (372 m). This tower, including the antenna, is higher than the Eiffel Tower. For years, the tower was known as the tower of Lopik, but because of municipal reorganisation, the tower is currently located on the territory of the municipality of IJsselstein.

The radio mast has an interesting history. Maarten van Rossem filmed a documentary for RTV Utrecht and scaled the tower, which is no mean feat for someone with a fear of heights. The mast is decorated with lights on the tethers (almost) every year around Christmas time, resulting in an extremely large ‘Christmas tree’.

The datacenter set up in the tower has the largest capacity of all our datacenters: over 1200 kVA. It is not the largest in terms of surface area, though; that would be the datacenter in Roermond.

Facts

The telecom & data tower in Lelystad is located on the west side of the city and has a beautiful view over the Oostvaardersplassen. This tower, built in 1975, is 190 meters high. To provide the harbour area of the city with a boost, the tower was illuminated in March 2014, making it a real beacon in the landscape.

In 2007 Cellnex bought the tower -and 23 other towers – from KPN. In March 2018 Cellnex realised a datacenter in this tower and since then several companies from Lelystad have stored their data in their own region.

Loon op Zand

Facts

On the border between Loon op Zand and Tilburg, this 153-meter-high concrete television tower is situated. It was built in the 50’s of the previous century after erstwhile minister Cals ordered that television in the Netherlands should become available to everyone. With the further developments of digital television, the tower’s height was increased from 125 to 153 in 2009.

As is the case with all Cellnex’s towers, this datacenter is not accessible to the public. Thanks to the video drone of Airpro Waalwijk, you can check out some views of the tower.

This media tower, better known as the Toren van Daalhof, is the eye-catcher of the Maastricht neighbourhood of Daalhof. With its 86 meters, it is an impressive appearance in between the houses.

Facts

Approximately five kilometers west of the village is this 154-meter-high television tower. You can find a miniature version of this tower in Madurodam in The Hague. In 2007, the tower was shortened after the analog television signal was taken offline.

The tower in Markelo grants a spectacular view of the Salland Hill Ridge and offers beautiful views of Deventer, Zutphen, Almelo and Enschede.

With a total capacity of 1000 kVA, this datacenter has the third-most capacity.

Facts

The concrete radio mast is an eye-catcher in the landscape that surrounds the Noord-Brabant town of Mierlo. The 105-meter-high construction was put into use in August of 1957, as one of the five radio masts that then minister Cals had built for the national television coverage. However, the tower was only used for this purpose for a few years. To this day, the radio frequencies are broadcast from this tower. When they bought this radio mast, Cellnex established their datacenter in it.

The telecom & data tower has been in use since 1957 and has served as a radio and television tower for the last couple of years. The 157-meter-high radio mast was actually 20 meters higher. When the antenna was replaced by KPN in 2007, they were able to use a shorter antenna. They didn’t need the space for analog radio stations, after all. This tower is built according to the same principles as the towers of Hoogersmilde and IJsselstein, but is significantly smaller.

Since June 2014, the telecom & data tower of Roermond houses a one of Cellnex’s large datacenters. With this location, the Limburg region was also given access to the datacenter of the future.

Since the beginning of the 60’s of the previous century, the tower of Roosendaal serves as a radio mast for radio and television. The radio mast was scheduled to be transformed into an apartment building in 2006, by the then owner KPN, but this did not come to pass. Cellnex bought the tower and used it to establish their data centre.

This data tower in Roosendaal was also opened to the public during the Heppie View Tour in 2014.

Facts

The first business who secured their data in this modular datacenter is the (maritime) transport company Jumbo. The 202-meter-high radio mast stands in de Waalhaven and is the highest free-standing mast in the Netherlands.

Since 1962, the radio mast has been used for the telephone service for many years and was also used for radio or television signals. Nowadays, the tower is used to transmit radio frequencies. This radio mast was constructed according to the same principles used for the Euromast. As the buildings in the city became higher, it became necessary in 1983 to increase the height of the tower.

The Toren van Spannenburg, as this telecom & data tower is sometimes called, was built in 1972 at the behest of the erstwhile PTT. The tower has a total height of 118 meters.

In 2007, Cellnex bought 24 telecom & data towers in the Netherlands, including this tower, from KPN and established its datacenters in them. With only 50 m2 of surface area, this is one of our smaller datacenters.

In November of 2016, Cellnex entered a partnership with ViaData Automatisering from Heerenveen and the tower was named: ViaData Toren. On November 4, 2016, the opening of the new datacenter was celebrated with a festive ceremony.

The broadcasting station of Ugchelen is a 142-meter-high construction made completely out of steel. These kinds of towers are called lattice towers. This tower was built in 1959 to transmit TV signals for the Dutch television from IJsselstein (Lopik) to Markelo and Zwolle-Kerspel for the television reception in the east and north of the Netherlands.

This tower was bought in 2007 by Cellnex to house a datacenter. The construction is also still fully in use as a radio mast.

The 144-meter-high concrete radio mast has featured in the beautiful landscape along the Zaan since 1968. The Toren van Wormer, also known as the Nozema tower, has been in Cellnex’s possession since its acquisition in 2007. This telecom & data tower was one of the first five towers enhanced with a datacenter in a radio mast.

The radio mast has always been used for television, first analog and nowadays digital, and still serves this function to this day.

In the radio mast of Zwollerkerspel, the analog antennas made room for Cellnex’s very first datacenter. On December 1, 2009, this datacenter was put into use by an accountants and consultancy firm with multiple offices in the Netherlands. The tower was never used for television signals, only radio frequencies were transmitted from Zwolle.

The tower stands in Zwollerkerspel, a former district in Zwolle, and was built around 1959.

Cellnex’s datacenter concept meets the design requirements of the Tier III Classification.
