Cellnex presents Edge Node, the solution for centralised infrastructure management in any type of building

Smart City Expo World Congress

  • Edge Node is a distributed computing software solution developed jointly with the Start-up Nearby Sensor, in which Cellnex has a stake. This solution makes it possible to gather the information generated by any type of physical device in real time, manage it in local mode, send it securely to a data management platform, and act automatically on the monitored elements according to the needs and parameters established.
  • Cellnex will present this innovative solution, and its multiple usage cases, at the next edition of Smart City Expo World Congress, held in Barcelona from 19 to 21 November.
  • José Antonio Aranda, Director of Innovation and Product Strategy at Cellnex, will take part in the programme of conferences at the Congress offering the company’s vision of the process of digital transformation linked to the roll-out of 5G technology.

Barcelona, 7 November 2019. Cellnex Telecom will unveil its latest advances in Internet of Things (IoT) technology to enhance the development of smart cities in the ninth edition of Smart City Expo World Congress to be held in Barcelona from 19 to 21 November.

On this occasion the telecommunications infrastructure operator, which has taken part in this event each year since the first edition in 2011, will present one of the latest advances in distributed computing that is applicable, among other things, to the IoT (Internet of Things), as a complement to the set of sensorisation solutions, networks and data management platforms that the company has for smart management of cities, spaces and buildings.

A “brain” to transform the management of spaces and buildings using IoT

Edge Node represents one step further in the development of the Internet of Things ecosystem in cities and is a complement to the remaining elements of this technology such as sensors, networks and data management platforms.

It is a distributed computing software solution, developed jointly with NearbySensor – a Start-up in which Cellnex holds a stake – which is also prepared for integrating the management of various infrastructures at the same time and which Cellnex has incorporated into its global IoT solution together with its Smartbrain platform for data collection and management.

Edge Node works through a server to gather the information generated by physical devices in a centralised way and in real time, manage it locally and send it securely to the data management platform. It can also act automatically – depending on the needs and parameters established – upon monitored elements such as temperature, pollution, lighting, access management, with no need for manual intervention.

One differentiating factor of Edge Node is that it provides distributed intelligence to provide real-time management of the information processed, with minimum latency. This data is stored and kept over time to allow continuity without any information loss if the connection fails.

Furthermore, it allows for automatic roll-out and local running of applications and the deployment of Machine learning or image recognition algorithms, to name just a few, integrated in real time with the physical signals of the devices.

To ensure security, the architecture is based on IoT nodes which guarantee complete securitisation of the data circuit, as the concept of cybersecurity is embedded in the design.

Edge Node can be implemented in any space or building (offices, factories, shopping centres, hotels, hospitals, museums, schools, etc.) to centrally manage their infrastructure.

Cellnex invites Smart City Expo visitors to “spend a day in the smart city”

This is the ninth year in a row that Cellnex has taken part in Smart City Expo World Congress.

In addition to unveiling its latest developments in IoT technology, the company invites visitors to “spend a day in the smart city” by taking a tour through the interactive panel located at its stand (Hall 2, A154).

The idea is for visitors to get to know at first hand what IoT solutions the company offers and that these can be applied from the moment you arrive in a city and spend a whole day there, either for professional and/or leisure reasons.

These solutions include mobility (sustainable transport, smart roads, V2X communications, Smart parking), enclosure management (safety, consumption, energy efficiency), materials tracking (goods tracking, monitoring and detection of incidents along the way), connectivity in high foot-fall areas (shopping centres, sports or cultural venues) or security (early detection of incidents using drones).

Cellnex has an IoT network deployed all over Spain with more than 2 million devices connected daily

Cellnex has had an IoT service-oriented network since 2015, when it was the first global network to be rolled out in Spain. At present it covers the whole of Spain, including the Balearic and Canary Islands, with over two million devices connected, making it the largest network dedicated to IoT at European level at this time.

This network, which stands out for its low bandwidth and long range, as well as for being robust and energy-efficient, is already a key element in the development of the connected society. It has a direct effect on situations in everyday life, such as traffic regulation, optimising urban resources or monitoring and geolocation in the logistics sector, among others.

Cellnex uses its Smartbrain platform and its wireless connectivity network infrastructures to provide access and secure transmission of the data collected using IoT sensors, Edge Computing systems or other information sources and systems.

The platform makes it possible to detect and efficiently manage all the needs of a city, providing reliable real-time information for better decision making. In addition, controlled and secure information access helps to foster open data use between the administration and the entrepreneurial ecosystem, boosting a spirit of innovation and the co-creation of new products and services.

The company’s vision and experience in rolling out 5G at the Smart City Congress

José Antonio Aranda, Director of Innovation and Product Strategy at Cellnex, is taking part in the conference sessions held in parallel to the exhibition, together with key international experts. Mr. Aranda will speak on 20 November from 11 a.m. onwards in the session on 5G Digital Transformation, where he will share the company’s vision and experience in rolling out 5G and its applications in Smart Cities.
