Success Case
UNICO – Broadband Programme
Latest Innovations
Cellnex (via Tradia) has deployed fiber‑optic backhaul links in the provinces of Illes Balears and Ávila (Spain), successfully connecting four mobile towers. This deployment brings high‑capacity connectivity closer to rural citizens and businesses, improving service quality and enabling advanced digital services.
With this upgrade we are closing the connectivity gap and enhancing digital connectivity for residents, businesses and public services in rural areas contributing to a more connected, competitive and future ready territory.
The progress has been possible thanks to European co-financing through the UNICO – Broadband Programme (TSI-067100-2022-170 – BALEARES; TSI-067100-2022-198 – ÁVILA), under the Investment 1 of Component 15 of Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
Through this project, Cellnex reinforces its role as a key enabler of next‑generation digital infrastructure, contributing to a more connected, competitive and future‑ready territory.
Challenge
Many rural areas in Spain continue to experience limitations in mobile service quality due to the absence of high‑capacity backhaul connections, a key element for delivering robust mobile broadband and enabling the deployment of 5G networks.
Areas with under 5.000 inhabitants are the most affected by this digital gap, which impacts both citizens’ connectivity and the economic competitiveness of local businesses.
This project addresses the challenge of reducing the digital gap, ensuring equal access to advanced connectivity and supporting the social and economic cohesion of sparsely populated areas.
Solution
To meet these needs, Cellnex has deployed new fibre‑optic backhaul links in Illes Balears and Ávila, connecting four strategic mobile sites located in municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. This infrastructure upgrade delivers the high bandwidth and low latency required for:
– A substantial increase in mobile service quality in underserved rural areas thanks to fibre optic backhaul
– Improved connectivity for households, businesses, and public services
– Readiness for 5G networks and advanced digital services
– Greater territorial cohesion through universal digital infrastructure reducing connectivity inequalities
– Support for local social and economic development through enhanced digital infrastructure
Through this project, Cellnex reinforces its role as a key enabler of next generation digital infrastructure, contributing to a more connected, competitive and future ready territory.
